methodology
The evidence-based techniques used
1Multisensory structured language (MSL)
Anna has completed training in Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) with the Institute of Multisensory Language Education.
“The MSL Approach is language-based, multisensory (V-A-K), structured, sequential, cumulative, cognitive, and flexible. Its breadth, perspective, and flexibility prompt use of the term approach instead of a method.”
She has also trained with Lillian Fawcett who developed 'Cracking the ABC Code', Rosemary Ruthven, who runs NESA approved 'Structured Literacy' courses and Ron Yoshimoto, who is a well-known OG practitioner.
2Writing Matters approach
Anna has trained in William Van Cleaves's Writing Matters approach for developing sentence skills. Anna's writing classes incorporates William's scope and sequence for the teaching of grammar and syntax combined with writing strategies outlined in Judith C Hochman's 'Writing Revolution' and Diana Handbury King's 'Writing Skills'.
3Talk for Writing
Anna has trained in Talk For Writing, which enables children to move "from imitation to innovation to independent application." Students work with exemplar texts and learn sentence structures orally before learning how to write sentences and paragraphs associated with different text types.

Testimonials
Phillipa, Music teacher
After my son was diagnosed with dyslexia, I tried to help him with his literacy. It was obvious that he needed an expert and I found Anna. Her expertise in teaching children with learning difficulties is second to none. After only six months of lessons with Anna, my son's self esteem improved dramatically.
He has been having two lessons per week with Anna for the last two years. His spelling and sentence structure is now on par with his peers. Anna is an asset to any family trying to help their child(ren) with literacy problems.
Bianca, G.P.
Anna has been a literacy tutor for my two daughters, aged 9 and 11 for several years now. She is a warm and engaging MSL tutor who always goes above and beyond to prepare lessons individualised to each child including sourcing reading material relevant to their current school units.
She also addresses broader topics such as study skills, organisation and mind-mapping. She is continually updating her skills by attending relevant courses and workshops and is passionate about her work. I would highly recommend her if you have a child who has dyslexia or is just struggling with literacy in any area.
Nicole, Communications
We were looking for someone to teach our son how to take notes; revise for exams; and logically tackle assignments.
While he’s only recently started with Anna, he is enjoying his group sessions (he describes as ‘fun’ and we are delighted with how engaged he is.
FAQ
Is structured literacy evidence based?
According to the Five from Five Alliance, There are 5 essential and interdependent components of effective, evidence-based reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension.
Do I need a dyslexia assessment?
You do not need an official diagnosis before commencing literacy intervention. Lessons are structured for a wide range of students; from providing a little extra help to in-depth support for learning differences.
How fast will the progress be?
The length of intervention will depend on the student’s strengths and weaknesses and the amount of time he or she spends in practice. After the initial assessment, you will be given a recommendation about lesson frequency and what practice students should do between lessons. More about dyslexia and learning differences here.
What resources are used in lessons?
During class, a range of age-appropriate lesson resources are used so students remain engaged throughout the lesson. These include literacy games, decodable books, a whiteboard wall and desk, kinetic sand and other manipulatives. This helps students learn in a multisensory and engaging way.
Do I need to buy special equipment?
You may be recommended some small purchases which will help your child. Additionally, you will be able to borrow resources for home practice. If you want to attend classes via Zoom, you must have a fast enough connection and a computer with camera, speaker, and headphones.
What if I am sick?
If you have only minor cold symptoms, you may like to attend Online via Zoom. If you provide 24 hours notice, you may reschedule your lesson. Your teacher will provide a couple of alternative dates.
